The snow day. An age-old institution that for many is one of the most memorable parts of childhood. Anyone who has experienced a snow day in childhood can probably remember it.
What made it so special was the wondering…the waiting…the anticipation…”will we or won’t we?” Back in the day, you had to listen to the radio for school closing announcements. Since they were usually in alphabetical order, you were really nervous with anticipation if your school was towards the end of the alphabet. The hoping…the praying…the disappointment if your school wasn’t announced. The simple joy when it was.
Today’s technology has taken away this simple joy of childhood. Now there are email alerts, internet postings, phone trees, automated phone messages, texts, etc. No more do kids have to wait for the radio announcement. No more do kids have to turn on the radio just in time to hear “we will repeat this list in 20 minutes” and experience the small disappointment of having to wait. No more do kids have to experience the wondering…waiting…anticipation…”will we or won’t we”…the hoping…the praying. Another example of kids not having the simple joys that I did. Snow days are still special, but that element that made them more so has been lost. How sad.
