The childhood dream: a snow day. Its a shame that technology has ruined the excitement of this wondrous time. Remember when you had to listen to the radio for your school's name? The anticipation and excitement that only got worse (and better) when you realized that the radio announcer was reading the Gs when your school was in the As, so you would have to wait 15 minutes until the next reading by the DJ.
There were no automated school calls, text messages, or email. You didn't know if school was cancelled until you got up in the morning. You would listen to the radio anticipating the list the night before, only to have to go to bed. Hearing the school closings was the only reason you woke up early voluntarily.
Here's a phenomenon that didn't exist when I was young. Now schools are announcing closures before the storm hits. It used to be that snow actually had to be on the ground before schools would cancel. Improvements in meteorology (still partially a fraud in my book) have allowed schools to decide earlier whether they'll be closed or not. Now an email and automated phone call goes out the night before.
How sad that technology has destroyed another part of childhood for this generation of kids.
